The three cards that give cashback on education fees
Education is an excluded category on most cashback cards, including SBI Cashback, Swiggy HDFC BLCK, HSBC Live+ and PhonePe SBI Black. These three are the exceptions. To see how all 11 cards compare on your everyday spends, use the cashback credit card comparison calculator.
| Card | Rate | Caps and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Neu Infinity | 1.5% | Fair usage limit per merchant. The bank does not publish the number, so a very large fee paid to one school may earn less than 1.5%. |
| HDFC Millennia | 1% | 1,000 points (about ₹1,000) per statement cycle on the 1% category. The cap is hit at a ₹1,00,000 fee in a cycle. |
| Jupiter Edge | 1% | 1,000 Jewels per transaction, 3,000 Jewels per merchant and 10,000 Jewels per category. The transaction cap is hit at ₹1,00,000 per payment. |
One point or Jewel is treated as ₹1 here. Neu Infinity earns NeuCoins, where 1 NeuCoin is also ₹1 on Tata Neu.
How the calculator works
- Neu Infinity: 1.5% of every payment, up to the monthly limit if you enter one.
- HDFC Millennia: 1% of what you pay in a statement cycle, capped at ₹1,000 per cycle. We assume each payment lands in a different cycle, which holds for monthly and term payments.
- Jupiter Edge: 1% of each transaction, capped at ₹1,000 per transaction and ₹3,000 per month for the same merchant. Tick the split option and a big payment is broken into ₹1,00,000 chunks, up to three of them a month.
Totals are yearly cashback, rounded to the nearest rupee. The calculator ignores annual fees, GST on the card and any convenience fee.
Which card wins, and when?
- Neu Infinity is the default winner. 1.5% beats 1% on every fee size until its fair usage limit applies. For a typical school fee, it earns half as much again as the other two.
- HDFC Millennia is the backup. If you already hold it or the Neu limit bites, it earns a full 1% on payments up to ₹1,00,000 per cycle.
- Jupiter Edge helps with very large fees. Because its caps are per transaction and per merchant, splitting a ₹3,00,000 annual fee into three ₹1,00,000 payments earns ₹3,000, where Millennia stops at ₹1,000.
- Frequency matters for capped cards. Paying ₹3,00,000 in one go on Millennia earns ₹1,000, but three payments of ₹1,00,000 in different cycles earn ₹3,000.
Things to check before you swipe
- Pay the school directly. Third-party apps such as CRED or Paytm often charge 1% to 2% plus GST, which wipes out the cashback. Use the school's own portal or POS machine.
- The school's merchant category matters. Cashback depends on the payment being coded as education. Some schools route payments through a gateway coded differently, so check your first statement.
- Some schools add a card surcharge. A charge of 1% or more cancels the gain. Ask before you pay.
- Pay the bill in full. Credit card interest in India is often 3.5% a month, far above any cashback.
- Rules change. Banks edit rates and exclusions often. Confirm with the issuer.
Education fee credit card FAQs
Which credit card is best for education fee payment in India in 2026?
Neu Infinity gives the highest rate at 1.5% on education fees, against 1% on HDFC Millennia and Jupiter Edge. Neu Infinity has a fair usage limit per merchant, which is not published, so very large payments to one school may earn less than 1.5%.
Do most cashback credit cards give rewards on school fees?
No. Most cashback cards, including SBI Cashback, Swiggy HDFC BLCK, HSBC Live+ and PhonePe SBI Black, exclude education payments. HDFC Millennia, Neu Infinity and Jupiter Edge are the main cards that still give cashback.
What is the cashback cap on HDFC Millennia for education fees?
HDFC Millennia gives 1% and the cashback is capped at 1,000 points (about ₹1,000) per statement cycle on the 1% category. A fee above ₹1,00,000 in one statement cycle earns no extra.
How does Jupiter Edge cap education cashback?
Jupiter Edge gives 1% with three caps: 1,000 Jewels per transaction, 3,000 Jewels per merchant and 10,000 Jewels per category. Splitting a large fee into payments of up to ₹1,00,000 each can earn more, if the school accepts split payments.
Is it better to pay education fees monthly, per term or annually?
For capped cards, smaller and more frequent payments earn more because the cap resets each transaction or statement cycle. A monthly or term payment of up to ₹1,00,000 earns the full 1% on Millennia and Jupiter Edge, while one large annual payment is cut off at the cap. On Neu Infinity the frequency matters less.
Do payment apps like CRED or Paytm charge extra on school fees?
Many third-party fee payment apps charge a convenience fee of 1% to 2% plus GST. That is usually more than the cashback, so paying on the school's own portal or POS machine is normally better.
Are the cashback rates on this page guaranteed?
No. Banks change rates, caps and exclusions often, and cashback depends on the school's merchant category code. Confirm with the card issuer and check your statement after the first payment.

Rates, caps and limits come from each card issuer’s published terms and the same comparison chart (dated 26 May 2026) behind our cashback card comparison. Whether a fee earns rewards depends on how the school or college is registered with its bank and payment gateway, so the real result can differ from the estimate. Rates are re-checked when a bank announces a change and at least once a quarter. Spotted a wrong figure? Tell us through the feedback form on the main calculator page.
